haven't read it yet, so might be wrong but if it haven't been explicitly implied that the mc is an otaku or a consumer of culture, then you can't really expect him to know anime characters and stuff other than the mainstream ones You can't know what you don't know until you do

But that defeat the whole point of going to a parallel with fictional characters from different fandoms. He is no better than a native who suddenly got a system. And it makes the use of other fandom characters feel cheap.

based one what ive read so far it doesnt seem to be as you claim it to be. He doesnt recognize the people or characters that reference to different works at all
