Another decent story ruined by a braindead MC. He eats a plant which only has a 5% chance of not killing or crippling the consumer, and he survives. Yay! He's not doomed anymore! He can slowly work on his cultivation, enter a good University, and- oh. He just ate two more of that plant.

He was scammed. The guy who sold it to him told him it was a 50% chance.

I'm not really upset that he risked death to save himself from an extremely poor situation. He's in a bad position, and his sister will die and he will be forced into a perilous lifestyle if he doesn't act quickly. He's ill informed, but frankly, I would be okay with him eating the first one, even if he did know it only had a 5% chance of survival - given the situation. I'm upset he did it a second time, despite being informed of the real statistic, and having found a way out of his situation. He ate the other two plants for no real reason!

I can understand why you might think that, but there is a factor you might not have thought of. The symptoms of flower poison ginseng involve massive tearing muscle pain. But when he took the first one, he had a headache and passed out. Not at all typical. So he can reasonably expect that he will continue to react the same. His odds are far higher than 5%. You might even say his risk is more like 5% instead.

If anything, having an atypical reaction to a drug is a bad thing! Yeah, he had some weird symptoms. That doesn't mean he should consume more of it to see what happens! If anything, it would be smarter of him to just consult with a physician or something.

Normally one might check with a doctor, but that stuff is illegal. He might think, it didn't poison me the first time, why would it suddenly poison me now?

That's pretty much what happened tbh. I do think it was a poor choice on his part, though.
