Shadow Slave is criminally good for a webnovel. Generally, in the webnovel landscape under the pressure of deadlines and consistent uploads, many aspects of the story tend to suffer over time. Guilty has managed to keep up the quality for years now and it only seems to be getting better. The characterization in this story is a particular strong point, especially in contrast to the general offerings in the webnovel progression fantasy scene. Throughout the 2 million odd words, our main cast of characters go through moments of comaraderie and separation, love and heartbreak, and trust and betrayal in ways that manage to shock us every time. I really care about these characters a lot. They are very dear to me. I think about their nuances and relationships a lot, and it’s very impressive that Guilty has managed to write them in a compelling and controversial way on such a schedule. This of course brings me to the output and consistency of Guilty. The man does not miss. It’s been years now on this schedule and he has consistently uploaded high quality chapters each and every day. Even when he went on a well deserved vacation, he broke his back to make sure he had written all the scheduled chapters ahead of time. A lot of us read shadow slave daily and it’s part of our routines in the same way we drink our coffee or brush our teeth. To commit to delivery such comfort each and every day without fail is something I can only admire with awe. Guilty has managed to write a coherent, well foreshadowed storyline stretching over millions of words, thousands of chapters, and hundreds of days. I’m really thankful for the entertainment he has provided us. Even in what I consider to be the weaker parts of Shadow Slave, guilty still delivers. I find the prose to be nice and serviceable, but often peppered with good quotes that stick with me for awhile. The world building is well thought out, even as it’s something I don’t quite connect with as much as I do the other aspects. Sometimes it can be heavy on the info drops, and I found the opening of the book a little difficult to get invested in. However even with these small points, it remains head and shoulders above most other offerings on this site. I think Shadow Slave well deserves its spot as the number one novel on Webnovel, and I think we are lucky to be reading this work as it releases, surrounded by likeminded fans. If you haven’t read it yet, you definitely should give it a go.
