Evolution is random and won't lead to all of us being gay just some of us, also we have to note it's way more unlikely for gay genes if they're any to be passed down as the bearers are gay. But this is a nature vs nurture argument and it's one of those things you'll never really be sure of. The reason I think it was categorized as a mental illness before is because of the way mental illnesses work. Let's use Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) as an example, some people have a natural tendency to it and then a traumatic event triggers it and that's how most mental illnesses work. So those people probably have a tendency from birth to be gay and then life events trigger it, but anyhow it's no longer considered a mental illness so I don't know if any findings where made.
