This book is very very horny, to the point where I’d say it’s about half porn and half plot, so I’m going to divide my review into three sections: smut, plot, and general. Prose: the writing quality is very good, with descriptive but not overly wordy descriptions of people and actions, and less of a focus on background and location. It is definitely more detailed and immersive during smut scenes than any other time, but it is still interesting and well written overall during SFW sections. Smut: the best I’ve seen in a book on here, or pretty much anywhere. It has a good combination of vulgar and and detailed descriptions and more romantic/poetic descriptions. It has a bit too much of a focus on euphemism and figurative speech (for my personal preferences at least) early on, but gets a lot better later on in the book. Unfortunately, it also gets slightly repetitive as the book goes on, but it’s not to the point where it gets boring. Disclaimer: it is very very raunchy, dirty, and vulgar, and there is a lot of very taboo, forbidden fruit, and kinky sex in it, so be warned that if you don’t like that kind of thing this probably isn’t for you. That being said, the smut scenes are overly immersive and very hot. It shouldn’t be hard to get aroused reading this. Plot: genuinely my favorite part of the book. The characters are interesting, and they each have their own unique and nuanced motivations (except a few members of MCs harem who are pretty boring but they’re very minor characters at best). It feels like there are several plots running underneath the main story that have yet to be uncovered. There are many secrets and twists that I find very enjoyable, and it constructs a more believable and interesting world than the vast majority of culitivation novels. The one downside is that the plot is held back by the smut focus, but it’s not too much worse than a normal action book being held back by lengthy fight scenes, and the smut has its own benefits as well. Worldbuilding: the worldbuilding is very interesting in terms of lore, both historical, political, and in terms of the mystical side of cultivation. Slightly weak when it comes to establishing atmosphere and location, but I think it more than makes up for that with its character and narrative focused worldbuilding, establishing relationships, history, and conflict very immersively. Action: it’s not very action heavy, and the action isn’t the best I’ve read, but it’s exciting and fast paced enough to keep you engaged, and it doesn’t come up too often or stay around too long for it to be boring. Characters: the characters can be one dimensional emotionally and personality wise, and the dialogue isn’t the most advanced, but in terms of motivation, connections, and actions they are very well written and draw you into the story very well. It feels like every character has nuance and secrets, even if they don’t necessarily have much emotional range. Overall, it may seem like I’m more critical of this book than I actually am, because I wanted to highlight the flaws so I could contrast them with how good the rest of the book is. I strongly recommend this if you are interested in a less action heavy, more political/emotional story compared to most cultiaction novels (as long as you don’t mind a lot of smut). I wouldn’t recommend binge reading this because you probably don’t want to be aroused all day long, but reading it in private in the evenings is very enjoyable. It is almost a 5 star book, and would be if not for the fact that the focus on smut slightly weakens some other aspects of the book.
