I'm giving a detailed summary of the first 20 chapters. MAJOR SPOILER ALERT Chen Zhao, a doctor in China, lost his job and came to LA with his mother's help. During his stay in a cheap motel owned by a man called Ethan, he accidentally opened his family artefact and summoned a speaking dog, named Beelzebub, who claimed to be the projection of a demon in Hell and a subordinate of Gluttony. Chen learned many interesting facts about Hell from Beelzebub. With his and Beelzebub's abilities, Chen managed to save a dying girl, which greatly impressed Ethan. Meanwhile, he discovered that whenever he saved a person, a special item, which Beelzebub called the demonic crystal, would appear in the family artefact. Beelzebub told Chen that demons could consume the very rare demonic crystals to extend their life. Convinced that he did not have enough money to survive until he could receive a medical license, Chen accepted Ethan's suggestion to become an illegal doctor, where Ethan would receive commissions as the intermediary. As he treated his first patient, he summoned his second demon servant, a snake called Raymond, subordinate of Lust. Beelzebub was clearly unhappy about this, leading to many funny moments. Chen hooked up with a policewoman called Gerlyn, whom he had met in the motel. During one of their dates, they took down a criminal with the help of the two demon pets, and Chen received a large demonic crystal for his deed. Chen's next client was a gang leader with gun wounds. Just when he was about to fail the operation and be killed by the leader's man, he saw a Grim Reaper-like figure beside him. The Grim Reaper, or Soulbringer, whom Chen subsequently named Blackie, let the leader's soul off at the cost of some demonic crystals. However, being able to sense imminent deaths, he told Chen that the leader would still be killed by a female killer later, and Chen warned the leader, helping him to escape death. The three demons had many trivial, entertaining conflicts in the motel. One day, when Ethan was out and asked Chen to look after the counter, Chen checked in a suspicious couple, but did not pay much attention. After treating Gerlyn's colleague, they returned to the motel only to hear a gunshot. The man in the couple was killed, and the woman had presumaly escaped. From the man's soul which was drawn out by Blackie, Chen learned much useful information, but he could not tell Gerlyn. Ethan got Chen a rich client, who was unfortunately a racist and absolutely offended Chen during their first encounter. With Blackie's help, Chen prophesied what would happen to the man, which came true. Desperate and dying, the rich old man offered Chen a huge amount to save him, which Chen did by feeding him diluted demonic crystal solution. They agreed to have a few more follow-up sessions and the old man apologized for his words. With his newly earned money, Chen decided to rent a house in town. He was unsatisfied with all choices but a supposedly haunted house due to its very low rent. Blackie told him that the house was connected to an abandoned space crevice, place where Soulbringers lived. Chen rented the place and Blackie was about to move in and become his housemate...
