Great book, definitely up there with some of my favorite books of all time, for a couple reasons. First off, the magic system. The magic system in this book is extremely detailed, and the way the author writes the characters using it is very clever. It's much more than [Pikachu, cast Lightning bolt], and a returned [Charizard, Fireball!]. It has nuances in every fight, with the different magic styles of the enemies being different, to the strategies used by the mc, Lith, changing as he learns more about the system, and oh so much more. Everything the characters can do has a concrete reason behind it, and the reader can clearly understand *why* they can do it, and how the enemies can possibly counter it. In addition, it never really starts evolving. Without spoiling, all I can say is that there's *much* more than just the base magic system shown in vol 1. You get to higher tiers of magic, then to other things, and it all retains its quality. Kinda branching off of the magic system part, Supreme magus has an extremely detailed world, just in general. There's politics, schemes, hierarchies, etc., and all of the pieces can be clearly connected, and you can see how different parts of the world effect other parts, and how it's all interconnected. The third reason I like this book is the mc, Lith. This is a much more subjective part, as it's my opinion on why the mc's good, and why *I* like it, so take it with however much salt you wish. I like the main character, Lith, because he's ruthless without being edgy. The author manages to keep the ruthlessness and practicality that I love, while still making Lith 3d, and reasonable. Yes, Lith will absolutely torture people for info if they try to kill him, but he also has a caring side, and is constantly curious, but not to the point of being annoying. Lith figures stuff out. He learns, creates, and survives. I love his character, partially for the reason that it's not a character that'll spare the villain for no good reason, when they're clearly trying to kill the mc, but they also *make sense*. Lith feels realistic. Not cliché, not stereotypical, and certainly not generic. Lith is a unique, 3d character, and I love it.
