My house of horrors is an excellently written horror/mystery novel written by someone who could fix air conditioners, a rare skill in modern day, but what is even rarer is his ability to describe environments. It's a perfect balance of colors, objects, and characters without going into awful fanfiction territories (ex. I saw the blue car heading down the black road with a grey streetlight that had a yellow light). The story is generally well planned, the mystery is engaging, and when you finally think you know what the story is heading towards, the author pulls all that away from you and starts a new arc with a even larger mystery. The novel also does a good job setting up the villains. They were made to sound intimidating, and it's certainly achieved. The villains aren't pushovers by any means. Doctor Gao is certainly mysterious, the school of the afterlife is instilled inside the reader's mind since the beginning, the ghost fetus becomes more and more of a threat as the story progresses, and the Xin Hai hospital is the mystery itself. Over time, the story builds its narratives better than any other web novels. First, it was west Jiujiang, then the story builds up eastern jiujiang as an extremely dangerous place, and Xin Hai just kind of shows up in the middle. This is all good, but the story's over all pacing leaves much to be desired. Reading? No, most of what you will be doing is edging, and the author won't let you have any satisfaction until the end, and by that time, your experience is ruined. There were too many arcs, and some things, like the school of the afterlife, could have been reduced to make way for a calm before the storm. The hospital arc was too short, and I feel that more time could have been spent expanding Zhang Ya and Chen Ge's relationship inside the door. Lastly, while there were many tropes present inside the story, there were many clever ways to stop them from controlling the story. The system only provides small conveniences, and has importance within the plot, and the overpowered protagonist trope is often broken by several factors. 1, the world grows with Chen Ge, and as he grows, so does the danger. We start with encounters with baleful spirits, then fights with red sceptres, multiple red sceptres, and just when a small army is formed, the main character is already fighting gods. 2, (select) red sceptres need to hibernate before becoming combat ready after consuming a certain amount of other red sceptres. Zhang Ya is one of them, and while she is immensely powerful, she serves more of a 'deus ex machina' role rather than the tool to trivialise all danger, and even that is explained later on, how and why she was able to appear right when dangerous things happen. Anyways, don't sleep on this book. Turn on some spooky music, and enjoy 1200 chapters of a really good horror/mystery novel.
