Story and plot: Premise is straightforward, the story of survival of space crews whom were not even considered an elite units. Just a gathering of green ensigns whom were looking forward to comfortable stable life after training's over, with small numbers veterans and senior units whom oversees the training and maintainance. That, with a second rate spaceship that's 80 years old behind too. The threat of space alien and their nature is well made imo, which actually amplify just how much deep shit crews of UNS singapore got themselves into which add suspense to the crash course event. Its a unique blend of sci-fi theme of alien threat vs humans, and then Subnautica-ish survival adventure of the surviving crews in a seemingly magical realm. I felt that you did well describing the nature of alien planet(the colors of the forest, creatures, etc), it brought the feel that this is a foreign realm. The journey of the crew's survival can be summarized as "frantic" at best at intial stage, I can feel their vulnerability since they knew that despite their advantage of technological possession, those are finite in numbers. That, and most casualty inevitably arise when exploring the unknown. Characters: I find this novel character.....unique. Instead of the usual tunnel vision focus towards the main character alone, we get a multiple povs of both the crew members as well as the local inhabitants of the new planet. To me this expands the world introduction and buildings, as I have bigger picture of what UNS Singapore crews felt and thought as well as the local elves. Character building are enough that you wouldn't consider some of them as "mob charas", Like Greg the gob and Drake. Despite that, I can still felt Blake's presence as the MC. The spotlight's simply not necessarily on him all the time. Which is still fine, you showed that side characters plays an important role that builds the next event of development. Be it the crew's long term development plans, the state of politics on both sides, their daily routine, you just get attached to the crews and magical races that joins UN. Techs & magic: The favourite part of mine. Its an nice blend of our familiar modern tech with a touch of magic plus WWII level due to the crew's tech limitation. That's my current impression of the UN army. Even the magical warriors are no pushover, I like the fact that magic can be a threat especially with the existence of apex predator that took form of mythical magical beings. As a gunpowder lover like me, damn, I just love your arsenal development. Even the first gen invention, the Magilock rifle, give me lasting impression of traditional bolt-action rifles with magic internals + blackpowder. I think you deliver the excitement of technology versus fantasy magic very well. Just to name a few many example, that rocket pod tank that reminda me of WWII sherman tank with rocket pod attached, WWI plane vs dragons and now WWII cruisers/destroyers with blend of modern tech. Its a worthy read for people that loves the theme of technology versus magic war. Nicely done Neobear!
