It’s been a really, realy long time since I’ve enjoyed a series this much. I don’t know if it’s because my standards are high or my tastes are just too peculiar, but I rarely try to read something of this length just because I tend to find something that bothers me enough that I drop it. Or decide it’s not worth it to continue until the series finishes. Shadow Slave has captured my full attention for 1000+ chapters, while also not making me feel frustrated after getting this far. I can’t believe I’m still excited to see where this story is going. There’s always another mystery or piece of information to ponder. And the author doesn’t force characters not to make easy connections for the sake of a mystery’s reveal (unless it makes sense for the character or for comedic purposes). And I appreciate how the lore of the world weaves into the story. The victories feel earned and the growth of the characters organic. And the story doesn’t follow typical tropes, thus feels fresh with every arc of the story. The whole cast of characters are distinct and interesting. To be honest though, I probably stuck around for so long because I really love Sunny as the protagonist. He’s a character that going into the novel, I wasn’t sure I was going to like in the long run. But as he encounters new characters and situations, he learns and adapts, and his perspective on things expand, even contradict, things he believed prior. Overall, he is just very human. Now I’ll talk about some of pieces of the novel that made it perfect for me, but maybe less perfect for others. There’s enough death and devastation for this novel’s world to feel realistic to me, but it does pull its punches a bit before it can actually emotionally wreck you. To me, it’s the perfect balance— I feel like I’m reading something with real stakes but ultimately also something that I’m reading for entertainment. I’m not crying myself to sleep or anything after reading it. Which I’ve done before from other stories… and I don’t care for the experience.
