This will offend some people but rugby is way better than American football. Rugby has easy going rules so the violence can get spicy but American football or at least the NFL is going out of its way to make the sport soft. Watch the South African Springboks play and you will see how epic it is.

Keep moving and use the last chapter as the trauma needed for character development. Books where the protagonist grows after something bad happens may seem cringe but they are much more relatable as most humans are forced into improvement after they suffer or fail. As they say...weakness is not a sin but staying weak is.
