Yes, he knew.
Teaching him, protecting him, and overall looking out for him. However, the last moments spent with Arthur weren't the best memories that he had of him. He can't beat Sil. Not even close. Sil possesses his abilities and thousands more abilities. Sil knows how Russ's ability works and he can counter every movement. Even the god-slayer weapon that was created for him is nothing in front of Sil. Only the sword will be a problem as it can take away Sil abilities.
