I think the constant deaths is a message from Cuttlefish that inevitable occurrences will happen, and it makes sense that people around Lumian have their fates decided. But, solely as a narrative device, I feel like it lessens the impact of each death when it comes unceasingly like this. In the last book, the deaths were rarer, and each death was paced where they all felt like emotional highs. Now, I’m more feeling, oh… another person died by suicide. It’s hard to describe. I know it’s supposed to be sad, but..
