Do not get started. Story is pretty interesting but characters and setting are uneven. It is set in an alternative United States, NY where Businesses, Mafia, Government, and Karate people rule. Writing is often uneven. Events change sometimes, numbers change sometimes between chapters. Have to just let changes to characters or events not get to you. Alex is smart and dumb depending. He usually makes bad choices. He purposely lets situations get out of hand or goads people to hate/berate him. Gets a bit tedious at points as important part of living in society is publicly berating 'poor' people or people who dress normally, over and over and over. The story abruptly ends at 748 'golden eggs' and becomes new story at 749 'underground' with just Alex and cosmic karma magic realms with continuous tedious fights and new cardboard characters that you won't care about. It then ends up with Alex being an infinite-universes/multiverses timeline watcher/Fate and Alex messes around with different timelines for a while. He gets bored along with the reader, then literally jumps into a new timeline/universe where he forgets everything except what the new-timeline Alex knows. Its a different story starting at 886 'back to earth' with womanizing Alex with dramatic Debbie and (Yvonne since when?). Everyone is sleeping around and no one is really the same - liked the horse though - only character with real character. If you start the series at all, Stop reading/listening at 749. Gets tedious and story gets even more unsequenced and unbalanced after that.

story cuts off at chapter 748 - just cuts off, he never sees debbie (or even thinks about her) again, then 749 comes new cosmic karma startrek story of just alex and the realms and fights. Then later, 886, he jumps into alternative alex universe/story where he becomes womanizing alex with dramatic debbie. everyone is sleeping around and no one is really the same - liked the horse though - only character with real character. stop reading/listening at 749. Gets tedious and story gets even more unsequenced and unbalanced after that.

This story is like a train wreck that you can't help watching. This text is a short part. The youtube goes to ep. 85, still going... Story is alternative/parallel universe centered on small university and New York city. Things to note: NY is medium to large town, there are smaller villages nearby. Names are US english from 1940s-60s. Most prices are from 70s. There are modern cellphones and cars. Govt. seems like mishmash of East Asie, SE Asia and India. Its apparently OK to beat someone up if no police are around and if you kill them (doesnt explicitly happen that you know of) you just pay money to the family. Apparently happens often enough that no one is even impressed. Also appears that there is a class religion of desparaging anyone you think is inferior, usually due to clothing, cars, or just wealth and/or power. It gets tedious listening to the constant, over and over and over, calling people trash; pretty much every new person does it making them sound like an angry, low self-esteemed kid. There also seems to be about 3 to 1 ratio, girls to boys. And most women are so beautiful. Most young ladies try to get married to whoever they think is the richest. Alex, the main character is usually passive but gains different personalities, unevenly. He's not too smart but a few times he is. He can almost never decide anything but a couple of times he actually steps up with different personality. Also he looks average or handsome depending on the chapter. One thing is usually constant is that he is impulsive--later on he makes a lot of stupid meaningless threats. Its kind of sad because there are times he could easily say something or do something but he doesnt. He lies a few times, stupidly. And once he wasnt lying but it said he was. I didnt like when he hust stood there and let the girl get beat up but that seems to be the culture. Also seems another cultural thing is to whip up a yelling, disparaging, name calling mob based on nothing with nothing happening other than a lot of yelling. Money/cost is so uneven, sometimes changing depending on the chapter or forgetting how much was paid from chapter to chapter. The university shrinks and grows in size also. Hospitals are similar to 60s. Lots of older women (sometimes married and really old--yuck) chase after young men. Lots of silly, kid fights among people who should be adults.
