it wasn't a nerf. he was able to restore essence quicker with the black tunic. but that still doesn't change the fact that he has 5 times the total max essence of a typical master would have if their core was saturated. even a normal master normally takes a couple days to fully restore their essence. but now he's able to restore it all 5 times that much in only a day. I think the wording might have just seemed confusing because of the way g3 was trying to put things into context.
The rate of recovery was indeed greatly enhanced. Sunny had five shadow cores instead of one, so it took five times as long for him to recover all his essence — without the aid of the Shroud of Dusk. hard to say honestly. the amulet does sould damage...but the mantle also has a moderate level of protection against soul damage. if the amulet's soul damage is low enough, it might be negated by the mantle. but we have yet to see sunny use the mantle while the soul damaging charm is even active in the scene so who's to say

my thoughts is that when he hits a thousand he might be able to go to the next tier of awakening without leaving the dream world, either automatically, through some sort of quest described by the runes, or that he might be able to trigger the next nightmare for himself ((or even allies)) when he gets there.
