No sooner than I unpacked my lunch, the boys at the table next to me pelted me with spitballs and random bits of trash. A teacher intervened, but not before my food and my self-esteem disintegrated. Once distinguishing paper from the feta cheese in my farro and kale salad became a chore, and the girls seated next to me openly laughed at my misery, I declared my lunch inedible and fled the dining hall hungry and alone. - Duck_Dodger10mthCommented

Still, Wednesday managed to surpass the previous two as the worst day ever. I arrived at the cafeteria and sat at our usual table, expecting Samaya or Whitney to stop by or at least pause before ducking me. However, ten minutes into lunch, no one arrived, and I faced one of my biggest fears about high school: dining in Crestwood's massive dining hall alone, unarmed, and completely vulnerable. Every outcast understands the preparation necessary for dining alone—seats close to teachers and exits, books or devices to help ignore the stares. In junior high, I lived by those rules. The remainder of the week crawled on at a snail's pace. Every day one or both of my friends abandoned me at lunchtime. Lucas abducted Samaya to watch basketball film from Crestwood's rival teams from Monday onward. By Wednesday, he stopped asking to kidnap my friend. He approached our table with that irresistible grin and nudged Samaya. As a good friend, Samaya always glanced at me as if requesting permission. But her small gesture left me in an awful position. The week before Thanksgiving, everyone experienced the itch of an upcoming vacation. Students tried breezing through classes, and teachers fought waning attention spans as we anticipated the first of two winter holidays. When the bell for first period scattered Samaya, Whitney, and me in three separate directions, I entered environmental science and joined my new tablemate, Kya, as she unpacked pastries and juice. Once she learned the types of foods I liked, Kya brought them to class to share. When I glanced down and read chapter one, combat skills, I leaned to my left and banged my head against the leg of my desk and groaned. "What is going on with my life?" - Duck_Dodger10mthCommentedAfter my sunrise data collection call with Kya, Mom and I visited Toole Town for our Saturday morning volunteer work where I wrestled with my mental miasma during my art class. A soft ivory cocoon lured me into a warm stupor as the kids and I worked on autumn foliage paintings. The insidious haze of complacency beckoned me with a comfortable heat and drained everything of sound and color until nothing remained but gray. I struggled to focus on the haphazard gold and scarlet leaves the kids painted. However, once I planted my feet and focused on my task, the mist clouding my eyes gave way to the full spectrum of color, and as soon as classes ended, I begged Mom to take me home to capitalize on my lucidity.
