I would say wolves but toned down to dogs. Big dogs but dogs. Easier to explain: they escaped from their humans or survived them and came together to create a pack. Easier to feed, to accept and to train. Gabriel can say he already trained some for the army.

A few seconds later near a bush an injured Rookidee can be seen struggling to walk and is currently on the floor with its eyes closed.
