I think claiming to be from outside would be even more suspicious then just appearing out of thin air. At this point in time there was not one single succesful venture beyond the galaxy, and nothing came in from outside

I do not think that is how Data storage works. What he did is the same as destroying the monitor and keyboard while leaving the computer itself unharmed.
He went directly to the console, stabbed down with a sword, and the entire mainframe was instantly pierced by the lightsaber. Under the high temperature of millions of degrees, the mainframe was instantly melted into a lump of metal, and naturally, there was nothing left of the data inside.
