Well, in later stages of pregnancy, babies can hear. That's why parents are encouraged to talk to them , play soothing music and so on. The so called protective membrane is probably a placenta, but as long as cervix is closed, which is during normal pregnancy, no weird fluids or unwanted guests can reach the baby. When cervix dialates(opens), that means the labour (birthing) or miscarriage happening.
However, it wasn't all roses. He spent 9 months in the darkness, seeing nothing and hearing nothing.
