Haku is a man.

The chapter update is very slow at the moment because I don't have as much time as I used to to focus on the story :/

Itachi's connection here is with Zabuza and Haku. They were acquainted in the Land of Water during the civil war in Kiri. It's more explained in the chapter about Itachi after the massacre.
