Riftan had no qualms about destroying himself over anything concerning Maxi, while she was possessed by the perpetual temptation to cling to him and hide from the outside world. Maxi narrowed her eyes at the Croyso delegation, but her suspicions evaporated when she noticed the duke's wary demeanor. He had brought all these men solely for his own safety. The beating he had received from Riftan must have shaken him. - Death_soul1yrCommented
I would say she just verbally stabbed him, but I think that was much, much worse.

It's so conflicting because of Riftan's pov I understand why his like this, but I also why Maxi is saddened by his words.
