After watching the squires leave, Riftan led his remaining men up the hill. The castle sentries opened the gates as they approached. Riftan was on edge as he rode in, scanning the courtyard. Riftan opened the tent flap to urge the man along. The messenger walked past him, his nose in the air. As soon as his footfalls sounded distant, Riftan felt plunged into a deep pit.
