Nick knew that they weren't lying as he was healthy however he had reached the part of his transformation where his bone marrow , organs and flesh was starting to be replaced by elven versions. While this was going on his body was violently rejecting his human parts causing this strange situation. It caused quite the sensation throughout Hogwarts as despite madam Pomfrey's , Snape's and even Dumbledore's best efforts Nick didn't improve much at all. The main source of Harry's Level ups had been defeating monsters that roamed around the Tutorial Village. Whenever a monster died, it dissolved into particles of grey light which was considered Death Energy and Harry could absorb them. Once he absorbed enough energy to reach a specific threshold, Harry's level increased. The FAQ stated that when Harry leveled up, his Obscurus particles would replicate themselves using the external energy they had absorbed. However, the Obscurus particles he was composed of could not absorb just any energy. The energy he absorbed had to be dominated first. The monsters around the village were composed of energy of the afterlife and defeating them was what allowed Harry to absorb them in a way that his Obscurus particles could replicate themselves.
