Maxi and Riftan are both unreliable narrators. You really need all the POVs to piece together the truth. I find paying attention to the side characters helps a lot.

Maxi's blood ran cold. She quickly lowered her head to hide her shock. Riftan, who had treated her with such kindness before he left, now wore an expression so icy that she felt as if the breath had been knocked out of her.

Yeah. People on LNH were always so hard on Riftan, forgetting that a lot of the disfunction is also tied to Maxi’s inner narrator and the behavior born from it. Not that he’s without fault. But they both have a lot of trauma they have to address within themselves.

I'll change. I'll become a proper lady of the castle who Riftan can depend on.

Oh interesting. I actually get the opposite. I think he’s much more gentle here. I feel like this translation makes it clear that these two are both dealing with unaddressed trauma from the get-go whereas the LNH translation felt a touch toxic.

Yep. Due to her trauma Maxi is not a reliable narrator. It makes for trying to sort out the story challenging in all the best ways

In the uncomfortable quiet that ensued, Maxi realized how her words had been received. She let go of Riftan's sleeve as if it were on fire, blood rushing up her neck. Riftan gave no answer, perhaps struck dumb by her shamelessness. She clutched at her dress, not daring to look him in the eye. The knights exchanged awkward looks but, much to her relief, they soon changed the subject.

I would highly recommend starting over with this translation. It's professional, smooth, and accommodates cultural differences between Korean and English speakers. The characters are portrayed much more eloquently and a lot of what was perceived as toxicity is now much more clearly trauma response. This translation brings the author's intent to light in a way that the clandestine versions simply were not able to do.
