actually, she does fit the beauty standard in the book, it's just that maxi self esteem is so low that she has the impression she is ugly. however, want a character that for society and beauty standard doesn't look pretty ? riftan. we can't know it yet, but my boy went through so much in his childhood bc of this in riftan POV

exactly, this story is about the flawed, it's how the author talk about it and Maxi ans Riftan are flawed in that aspect. they both have huge and terrible trauma, they both need affection but they don't know how to give it because of everything they missed in their life. I think Maxi and neither Riftan are to blame they're really both trying their best with the few they can do.
