When I was researching this part I was also rather surprised that for some dynasties the court called on mathematicians as and when needed…I guess it just wasn’t a focus of the curriculum and those who dedicated their time to it were ironically (by modern standards anyway lol) regarded as not spending their time on proper pursuits hahaha
