the type of etiquette they are talking about here is different. every culture including the ones you dismiss also have theirs. the differences could be discussed all day long but for the purposes of this book, that was the reason for etiquette teachers. there where a lot of rules for every situation. these teachers where paid a heafty sum for this knowledge and perfection. If a child did not learn well and embarrassed the family, that teacher paid the price. sometimes with their life
