If he sold Dark Dream he would have been killed when he would have worked with Kugelblitz because they would have found out about his abillity and realised why Envy wanted it, therefore killing him. And also Julian would have killed him after granting his wish, because that way it would have consumed less zephyx and because Nick knows his secret. So becoming Julian's allay is the best choice, because he gets to live and a chace to change the city.
