I just want to hug him so badly. Poor Riftan. This first chapter of his POV is heart breaking
Riftan began trudging down to the shack. Riftan is so precious 🥹
The black hunting dog that usually shadowed the girl sat nearby. Its ears pricked up as Riftan approached. Being careful not to get too close, Riftan cautiously placed the pebble on the ground, then stalked away as though he had other matters to attend to. - Sleepy_Day_Dreamer1yrReplied to Shari_0238Though Riftan knew they were dumping all the tedious tasks on him, there was simply no way for him to protest. The others were open about their disdain for the boy with foreign blood running in his veins. It did not help matters that the blacksmith who had taken him on condoned their behavior. Needless to say, even after all these months, he had not been taught to make so much as a horseshoe.

The next morning, the sky was clear as if the storm had been but a dream. Riftan gazed up at it as he dried his face with his tattered sleeve. Despite his stepfather's intermittent patch-ups of the shack since spring, the ramshackle structure was too old to be anything but a hellhole during the rainy season. The deluge that poured through the night finally ceased at dawn. Blinking his dry eyes, Riftan washed his face with the rainwater he had collected in a trough. At their silent command, the soldiers ran their hands over the stone wall and pushed in a loose brick. A portion of the wall slid to one side, revealing a small opening. - Sleepy_Day_Dreamer1yrCommentedHearing the bitterness in his voice, Maxi anxiously watched Hebaron's receding figure. Astonishingly, the knight betrayed no indication that he was wounded as he mounted his horse and stood in position next to Duke Aren, who was organizing the men. The soldiers' grave expressions as they prepared for battle made Maxi's blood run cold.

About half of the barracks had collapsed, and agitated horses ran amok about the camp. Armed knights yelled as they stabbed the emerging ghouls with long spears. It was a scene from hell. - Sleepy_Day_Dreamer1yrCommented

Other than sprinting behind the squire, there was nothing else she could do. Ulyseon cut down the ghouls as they ran, and they were out of the chaos before they knew it.
