At first, I was not sure how 'devoured' would relate to the cold, but as I remembered my personal experience with the harsh winters of Sweden, where -20 degrees celsius was not so uncommon, I was slowly but surely able to imagine the sense of cold devouring my skin.
A sole entity slowly appeared from beyond the hazy pour of snow. The cold wind whipped at his black garments and a shrivelled hand with fingers like sticks pushed forward to clasp the lapels of his robe. "If they saw it, they would swarm me". Somehow, the concept of this is quite terrifying oo;

The only reason it sounds like I myself am the darkness is because I reside near the well to begin with. It acts as a fog to obstruct the views of the souls.
