So KDJ is the original one (Dokkaebi King said he had the power to birth a new world). And that one became two when HSY appeared to appease his loneliness. In order to connect with the former, the latter crafted a world for the former in which a Character would communicate with and between them. GAHHH it’s too much! The dearest wish of both the author and protagonist is to meet their reader again. It’s his dearest wish too but he can never meet them again (become one?) and so all they can do is meet for the first time. Just let this OT3 live happily together in peace! They’ve all gone through so much to search for something they already had but could never realize.

I didn’t understand SP’s choice on my first read through. It seemed far too idealistic, as if he could forget the pain and suffering of so many lifetimes. But reading again, it becomes very clear how much Dok-Ja’s bias stains the narrative. Ultimately, the original story was of a man cursed with never being able to save anyone and a child cursed to dream that story in order to save himself. And by breaking that dream, not only has SP saved that child from a never-ending nightmare, he has also saved himself. It’s a choice Dok-Ja as a reader could never understand, and I couldn’t understand it when reading from his perspective either. Dok-Ja may view this as a world where he got lucky at every turn, but until he stopped reading WoS revisions after his second Great Fable (Torch That Swallows the Myth), his solution has always been to sacrifice himself. Only after escaping from being a Reader, in which the only world with a happy ending he could imagine was one where he died, and becoming a Character did he survive and could imagine new Fables. Yet by letting go of being a reader, he doomed the world he originally imagined to halt. By this world’s design, Dok-Ja was never meant to receive a happy ending. So I can only hope that his companions can find the third road now that he’s lost his own way to find it…

I love how the only thing KDJ comfortably brags about is how awesome of a reader he is for being the only one to get through WoS 🤣

I think this is as good a place as any to say it. Now that his companions know they’re part of a world in which the end has possible already been written, Dokja’s main concern is their free will. It’s the reason why he too won’t read the final version of WoS. Knowledge that had previously felt like a saving grace is now a curse because knowing the end might make it inevitable. Not knowing might lead to the same fate, but at least they will have chosen the path that leads to it. He’s done this again and again from the beginning of the novel, introducing choices that might lead to a desired outcome and letting them figure out the hidden path to get there. He may already know the path they’ll choose, but at least they’re the ones making the choice, not him. Now, if he just told them that that was his concern, they’d slap him silly and tell him that having that knowledge should also be their choice. But he’s never been good at sharing his burdens, so the one choice he’ll allow himself is to give away his free will in order to support theirs.
