i don’t think riftan is fishing for compliments or making the conversation about himself. when you get to read his POV, you’ll see that he too has really low self esteem also from years of abuse. i think him asking for her to go on is because it’s amusing to finally see her open up and voice her own opinions about him when usually she remains quiet and submissive. remember in the beginning he too believed she despised him, so for her to now say the opposite is refreshing. it’s a step in communication for their relationship

i know we all know maxi’s sad backstory but everyone must keep in mind while reading that everyone thought the eldest Croix daughter was lavished and doted on by her father. this is why they have these opinions. their harsh judgement isn’t fair but her father manipulated even the public to believe his lies.
