A lot of them are purely living weapons. Just look up a variety of soul beast related novels. Fair amount of them only use a beast's soul as the very weapon, and might provide a simple stat boost outside of combat.

Order has always been flimsy at best.

Many things that do exist are outside of human perception. So, we have invented tools to interact with the universe. Making a metaphorical box in his mind can lead to slower growth here. Though, I can understand where he's coming from. Many have trouble accepting new ways of looking at the same thing.

Well, the dark brotherhood questline was funny.

There's some fusion ones. The problem I have is when they fused sentient creatures, and the protagonist doesn't feel the least bit creeped out possessing such ability.

If hunt an blood lust is a crime, then so is unsanctioned magic related skills.
