There's no sexist in there. He's saying that as a man he should not be easily satisfied and prideful for things like that. Be ambitious because only when you really become successful by yourself ( not just in lottery that is decided by luck) you can give your future wife/family a good life. He doesn't want his family especially his wife to live a hard life just because of his incompetence. You know, most or if not most, some men want their wife to live like a princess. It was based on the father's experiences as a man of his house. Well, that's what I believe as a daughter of a farmer and as a female.
