They mention destroying the nest crystals being taboo In mds. Because without the newest crystals there are no beast and therefore no way to farm crystals. The last couple chapters in mds ray explains that during his life the humans destroyed all the nest crystals on earth.

They weren’t destroyed by Ray. They were all destroyed though
