I know that this is a year too late, but it prefaced that part with 'maybe in a different era' which means that had he been born in to an era where kneeling was a big deal it might mean more to him now
Maybe had he been born elsewhere, or maybe in a different era, Leonel would rather die than kneel. But, this wasn't the life he was born into.
