Rank 1 magus simply don't have enough fire power or damage ability in their spell to even remotely affect the innate defensive spell of a rank 3 magus. A rank 3 magus don't even need to spend spiritual force, he can just defend naturally and even his simple physical attacks would be lethal to lower level magus. Quite in fact, A smart magus won't waste his spiritual force to conjure spell in a distressful situation. If you all remember back in Twilight Zone when Leylin and his group were surrounded by hundreds of soldiers, knights and an acolyte Leylin used a single spell to create an area attack which trampled them instead of dealing with them singlehandedly.
