The thing I love about this novel is the depth of events that we don't directly see. It's easy to give the appearance that more is going on without doing much work (like the grade two sausages) but far harder to constructed a series of events that isn't obvious, while giving the reader enough information to figure it out. Only with this chapter do I finally feel like I fully understand the chain of events from Cindy disappearing to killing Sheila and finally to her partner's death. And it all makes perfect sense now that we know how the AI behaves, even though you haven't directly explained much of the events themselves.

I thought Mind Flayer's mental resist could make it immune to the ESP suit?

Maybe the AI body that was mentioned? It's meant to give information after all. Then again, it might know more about that situation, since it should be able to scan the entire ship.
Matt was tempted to force an answer out of him, but he wasn't very confident. The more information he was able to learn from Scorch the more he feared him. There was no one in the game like this. Someone that knew everybody on the ship and even knew a few details about their life was frightening. Matt was actively trying to hide or distract from his identity and it felt like Scorch was trying to peer through the cloth curtain around him. - SirFred1413yrReplied to Gemiae
It was mentioned earlier in a comment by the author that the mask doesn't cover her entire face, so she doesn't need to take it off to eat.
Elder Yang went out of the cave after that. He did not even touch Tang Li Xue's fox mask, black cloak, or hood which covered her face and head.
