Though she wished to explain that the mages were only going to the Plateau to investigate the ruins, she was unsure if that was something she could disclose. Not knowing what to do, she shuffled behind Albern, who had the largest frame among the mages.
After gauging the Temple Knight commander's reaction, Riftan nonchalantly added, "If memory serves me right, it was the Temple Knights who were in charge of investigating the labyrinth. I don't recall ever hearing about a secret chamber."
Complicated emotions swirled within Maxi as she said halfheartedly, "He… probably stayed behind at Sevron Castle. I-I heard the Remdragon Knights set out immediately when they received our request. Since it required them to ride through the night, I'm sure they thought an easily-tired mage would only slow them down."
Riftan and his knights were already waiting in formation. She anxiously stared at the head of the group where he was stationed, his visor drawn over his face. He cut such an imposing figure that he almost felt like a stranger.
After watching his back for a moment, Maxi calmed Rem's snorting by caressing her neck, then slowly walked the mare out from behind the stone wall. The knights formed a shield around her as they rode through the ravaged village to where the Remdragon Knights were gathered.
Riftan was about to yell that there would be no carousing when he stopped himself. The brutal march through the mountains under constant threat of monster attacks had plunged the men's morale to rock bottom. A small reward would bolster their spirits. After assigning soldiers to stand watch, Riftan allowed the men to feast on the liquor and greasy food.
Riftan seized the opportunity. He charged his mount at an ogre, slicing off its leg. When the fifteen-kevette giant lurched and toppled to the ground, one of the knights riding behind him immediately plunged his spear into the ogre's heart.
Riftan followed the commander's gaze and frowned when he saw a group of noblewomen lined along the window. Their days seemed to consist of nothing more than leisurely strolls around the estate, drinking tea, and watching the knights train. As someone who had never lazed a day in his life, Riftan found such a lifestyle incomprehensible.
Riftan's eyes widened at the revelation. Though he had received numerous offers from nobles to enter their service, it was the first time any royalty had shown interest in him. The glare he gave Triton was full of distrust, making it clear he suspected an ulterior motive.
Taken aback by the knight's manner of speech, Riftan cocked a brow. The young man tapped the sword strapped to his back and added, "Let me warn you, though. This fellow and I are as wily as you are. I've been hankering for a good fight, so I suggest you keep your eyes peeled. I don't want this match to end too quickly because of any sloppiness on your part."
