It was actually one of the very first, if not the first, nightmare creatures he killed. It was in his first nightmare and was killed by a bunch of shadows that he was able to use because he was inheriting the lineage of shadow god.
From time to time, he chose a Nightmare Creature to be infected with a Mountain King's Larva. Slowly but surely, his swarm of thralls grew, which made it harder to hide them. Eventually, he had to abandon stealth and advance forward openly. I agree but it’s an interesting idea, author could come up with a fun combination I’m sure. For example, the champion of light’s power isn’t based on people perceiving him, just knowing about him. So maybe it would still work for Nick where everyone knows that he exists but he can still get the Null power boost by not being perceived.
