I agree that they seem slightly more boring, however I think that it is because every series needs slower paced world building to set the events for the future, books that are constant hype have never really made a long term presence in my mind due to it being hard to imagine friends and foes as anymore than 2D characters without a back story or initiative which makes events far less engaging.
