"Sacrebleu" is akin to a good ol "Goddamnit". It was really frown upon to call the name of God in vain in France back in the day so in order to commit blasphemy people used "Sacre" meaning damn followed by "bleu" to not say "Dieu" (God). You'll note the similarity in the pronunciation here.

Suddenly, the man sat up and bellowed at Ryan and his team, "Sacrebleu! You've ruined the holy church's plans!"

Pierre "Peter" and Guillaume "William" are very very very common names in France. In fact so much that in order to express the fact that you don't know what or how many people are involved in a matter you say "Pierre Paul Jacques"

"At least better than names like Pierre and Guillaume," Lumian countered with a grin. "If you were to call out Pierre in this place, a third of the people would turn their heads. Call out Guillaume, and another third will respond. As for this gentleman…"

"D'or" means "of gold" in french! And I may be overstating things here but "verl" sounds a lot in french to the verlan (think of reversing the syllables or the words of a term to create slang) of an old way to weight thing: the "livre" (also known as a "pound" for the filthy users of the Imperial System)

"Two verl d'or," replied the bartender, eyeing the glasses lined up on the counter.

"My cabbages" is a literal translation of the french saying "Mon chou". It has several meanings, from addressing to someone dear to your heart to berate someone in a stern but playful and a bit condescending manner. My math teacher in middle school really liked to use it when we gave her the wrong answer

"Ah, it is good to meet you, my cabbages," he exclaimed with fervor.

The absinthe when in its purest form shines of bright green color, the fact that its color is dimmed here is an indication that the drink has been mixed with some water. It's in fact indispensable knowing the toxicity of the original alcohol. It might be wise to look how absinthe is used through this story, it has been mentioned several times already and the drink being associated with rabid madness is an interesting point

"Alright." Lumian raised his glass and finished the light-green alcohol.

Fun fact: "Bénet" in French means "Idiot". It stems from the word "Benêt" used to qualify a idiot with a pretty soft heart and a bit candid in his stupidity

"We came to visit the Eternal Blazing Sun Church's padre, Guillaume Bénet, but he seems to be absent from both his home and the cathedral."

Little trivia, The Arièges who inspired the region where Cordu is located (Dariege) is also known for its leather and wool. Built on valley it was a very looked after place in France by well France and Spain who was relatively near for its premium quality in wool and weather. Moreover The Arièges is one of the most beautiful place you could find in France, if you're looking for an original trip or at least better than Paris, go to Foix (the capital of the department). It's a gorgeous place with a castle at the heart of the city and surrounded by the Pyrénées and thus during summer and winter altogether.

This one is hated by transphobic and LGBTQIA+ community alike

Twelve long years he had waited, studying what he could with virtually zero resources and even less parental support. Yet still, his mother declared last night during his birthday dinner that she wants him to drop out of the academy at age eighteen when the government funding for parents ends to become a beauty queen and support the family, refusing to this day to admit that she has a son, or that he is destined for a decade or more of military service.

Absinthe is a powerful alcohol (think more than 90%) with a strong green color who was so dangerous that the French Government forbid it in 1915. Its danger came from the fact it was pretty easy to make and strongly encouraged alcoholism and the spread of adulterated version of this drink
