Mtl probably didn't know that. 1 Wén is 1 catty of rice. 1 catty is about 600 grams, so 1000×600=600000 grams of rice. 600000 grams split three ways is 200000 grams per person. 200000 divided by 365 is 547.94 grams per day. Brown rice is 111 Calories per 100 grams, so basically 608 calories per day per person.

Wén can be an old classifier for coins and the Mtl might not know that. 他摸出铜钱结账,这一顿吃掉4文钱。Is the original text and basically means He took out 铜钱 (Bronze) to pay and the meal cost 4文钱 (文 is Wén). This might not be correct, but this is my best explanation.
