I feel like this is a terrible idea or at best a dangerous gamble. Kai mentioned in an earlier chapter about how Gary being an altered would mean he could push his plan further (which puts Gary at risk of being caught). But, if it works out, maybe Kai can help impede White Rose to a greater degree.

But this isn't unusual in a fight, going 100% in every strike is too tiring and unrealistic. But whatever to move the plot forward I guess 🤷♂️.

But he isn't fighting just to fight. He needs the money; that motive hasn't changed.
However, just fighting for the sake of fighting, wasn’t something Gary was used to. Even in his official fight against Billy and Steven he had his reasons to fight them. In the former case it had been because he had needed the money, and Kai had sorta forced him into that situation. In the latter case, he had believed that to be a quick way to gain Exp and his system had even sweetened the deal by issuing him a Quest. - Charles_M2yrCommented
Of course, why wouldn't he just admit to the authorities about being a part of an illegal fighting ring?

Wouldn't he have been able to tell as he got closer that two of his marked bonds/targets were in the same spot or nearby (his mother and Gil)? It should at least be a little obvious

He really doesn't have to cook the animal of you think about it. His healing ability seems capable of handling any disease he might get from eating raw meat.
