What you said feels kind of contradictory to me. She's an adult, meaning she should not be as easily swayed by some of these actions. Just to reiterate: he strangled her. He seemed to want to kill her. Then, for some reason, he changed his mind. Being unpredictable is not an indication of safety, especially to an adult. Adults are not as changeable as children and that fear seems like it would be pretty hard to overcome. It's also not rational. She may be able to rationalize that he's more unlikely to kill her now, perhaps, but that doesn't tend to make the fear from the action, or the acknowledgement that he actually could still want to kill her, go away entirely. She also doesn't appear to have memory loss, hence the feeling, to me, that this is not consistent with her character.

Insulting him is not the issue at all. The issue is that this word is a slur. It takes a description of a group of people and turns it into an insult. It's like using the n-word. You can insult someone without stigmatizing a group of people. Someone's skin color or medical condition should never be used as an insult. If you still don't understand the issue, please Google the word slur and the r-word. There are plenty of resources to explain why this word is inappropriate.

In English, that's a slur. It's offensive and inappropriate. He doesn't have an intellectual disability and even if he does, it should be called that. The r-word shouldn't be used and intellectual disabilities should not be used as a term to mock or insult others, only to appropriately describe the medical term they are defined as. The r-word began as a word to describe a medical condition. We don't use diabetes or cancer as insults to denigrate someone. These things don't make people lesser than and neither does a mental disability. The r-word has become that though, an insult. Continuing to use it is offensive and ableist.
