being a main character does NOT excuse a lack of plausible explanations as to how a main character knows something. everything she knows needs to be believable for her background and current situation. the author could’ve added in a minor detail like “she frequently studied the chemical compositions of foods, especially startchy vegetables as a hobby” and that would be enough. as long as the explanation is plausible for her its fine. but no explanation *at all* was given. besides, a person doesn’t have to know about the chemical compositions of foods in order to know how to cook them. also, loving food doesn’t automatically mean she knows scientific information about foods or how to prepare dishes in the first place. by your logic, you’re saying that, for example, just because someone appreciates realistic paintings that means they automatically have the desire to paint themselves and are skilled enough to do so. but that’s not true. liking something does NOT automatically equal skills for said thing.
