It's already been established early on that by using better materials and mana or intent his runes can be used used more effectively. Force II was mentioned to be his base from the willpower trial... So why is it so hard to expect that while doing all his mana training that he needs to take breaks from that he wouldn't do something like improve his armor when he just got his butt kicked for not using his power correctly and just being drunk on the idea, or improve his life saving bell? Based on what's been said this is immediately possible and makes sense for him to do. Instead of being annoyed, give the bloke an "Atta boy" for finally starting to use his head and just enjoy his growth instead.

So much negativity. Sure his dad want around and the like, but he is paying the bills and sending allowance money religiously. I think the MCs making a decently selfless call here.
