Is this the new plan? Attack her friends and drive them away from Jane, leaving her "alone and vulnerable". Jane has been on her own for a long time and it will be difficult to make her feel vulnerable, she also has friends in the shadows.

When Jane returned to her residence, her coachman informed her, "Milady, you had a call from Mrs. Reynolds an hour ago. It seems her niece was attacked."

That confidence is a lot of man to handle. He wants to the only man she has in her eyes, not just watching others keep her company.

Jane stared right back at him, unflinching. She had met plenty of men in the past and today, but none had ever stirred such emotions in her as the one whose arm now circled her waist. His gaze moved from her eyes to her lips, and his head tilted slightly, almost as if leaning towards her.

Oh, are you on his payroll?

Before she could move away from him, he leaned in and whispered, "Miss Reinhart, you are going to die soon. The killer is looking for you."

He's being a bit too forward. She did not invite him to join her. Jane, don't drink or eat anything he offers. He's giving off very sketchy vibes right now.

"Another completed case. You seem to be having more time in your capable hands," Inspector Woodbead said, noting her delicate features, which Jane caught on to. "I was supposed to meet a friend of mine who seems to have bailed out." Without another word, he took a seat next to hers, which quickly put Jane on alert. He snapped his fingers at the server, who brought a tray of drinks, which the man picked up. He then looked at her drink and said, "If you are here to celebrate, you should do it with the right drinks."

    Lousy pickup lines

The man smiled at her. "We have, many times before. You must have seen me in your dreams, just as I have met you in my dreams."

Is this what's known as a Freudian slip? But which one of them slipped?

Mallory, focused intently on Hadeon's instructions and her own burgeoning ability, didn't notice the exact direction she was aiming for. In a blink, she vanished from one side of the seat and reappeared—this time right in Hadeon's lap.

The first big change Mallory implemented was waking up Hadeon. He is his own tsunami.

"True, but that's only because they appear in a prophecy," Hadeon replied. He then continued, "Prophecy bearers are people who hold a significant role of a change or a disruption in the living realm. In a way, you have to believe that someone is scared of you."

Looks like that switcher will be the next one to die "because of Mallory". ~Why do they always want to throw the blame on someone else for the acts that they choose to commit?

"If you didn't exist, Hattie would be alive. Kill yourself," the switcher used Hattie's voice, which squeezed Mallory's heart.

"Bring doom" But for whom? The bad guys (who, of course, don't think they are bad guys)?

    "Bring doom," the switcher answered.

I have taken a long time to actually write a review for this book. I've been following Ash's books for a long time now and have read almost all of them. I admit that I wasn't too sure about this one at the beginning, but it has turned into a most enjoyable ride. There is so much humor in here. Right when the tension gets high, something out of the blue on the side will be noted that just makes you burst out laughing. While it's not all just fun and games, the serious mystery that is the core of the story will keep you coming back for more. Take a chance with this one, especially if you like what could be considered dark humor and, I bet, you will love it, too.

    What a filthy creature.

The switcher began to smile, one that looked deranged as he replied, "I found her in the woods, all alone. I tried to get her before, but somehow she always slipped. She wasn't the best, but when I finished eating her, it was wonderful. It was everything I needed," he chuckled, which fueled Mallory's rage.

Poor Hattie. What an awful way to end up. 🥺

Hadeon's eyes darkened as he looked at her and replied, "Some of us call them changelings, some call them switchers. Purely because they can shapeshift into anyone after consuming the person. By doing this, they acquire not just the appearance but also the memories of the deceased."

I'm a bit confused. Can you please explain, Hadeon?

Footsteps approached the door, and Mallory's eyes widened upon seeing Ivy appear with Barnby and she looked perfectly fine except for the mark on her cheek. "She's alive? Then who is that?" she whispered, pointing at the floor.

Ricardo may have been a vigilante, but this one is just a flat out psychotic murderer. It can't be Gruger, he's too stupid. True psychos are quite intelligent.

At least it was Addison who tripped over the body. He is a witness.

Already irritated with the guards Gruger had set up and her lead escaping, Jane retorted, "Yes, I met him when he dropped the body, while the man we were chasing was a ruse to get your guards away from me."

They were too busy scaring off her lead for her official case.

"Miss Reinhart, it seems you've circled back into the case," Sergeant Gruger remarked, clicking his tongue. "I hear the guards weren't with you when you discovered the body?"

Screening her calls now, too, are we?

At night, Jane received a call, and before she could pick it up, one of the men who had been guarding her since yesterday answered the receiver.

Hattie showing her true colors 🤔. Is she working for witches, another vampire or the royals? I can't wait to find out.

Mallory turned in time and caught Hadeon standing behind her. When she looked across the room, her eyebrows furrowed in confusion at seeing Hattie on the ground.

"A little too much in haste, aren't we?" came Hadeon's voice, who held the assailant's hand before throwing the person across the room.

So why didn't you clean it up right away?

The maid pursed her lips, gathering courage to speak, "Milord, I didn't spill the oil on purpose. I was very careful with it..."
