Because they were the hopes of humanity. As geniuses, as somebody who has such potential and power I believe that to some of them believed that fighting for their race's survival is their burden to bear. After all if they, who are hailed as the most talented and powerful gave up who would still have the will to fight. Who would still believe that there was hope for survival. If they did it would deal a huge blow to morale and truly ensure that tge human race ceases to exist.
They were just kids; they didn't have to fight wars and shoulder the burden of the entire world.
