I think he had to destroy some/all of his spiritual sense to prevent that out break. So he's a little bit crippled. Altho I was expecting the story to continue where it ended.

I highly recommend reading first book, its 2450chapters. And yes, read it for better understanding But also... Its one of best novels out there. I could maybe name 2-3 that i enjoyed more.
